Mathematics
The Numeracy Strategy, like literacy, takes a vigorous approach in
what is to be taught, and how it is to be delivered.
There is an emphasis on mental and oral practice and in children
developing strategies to solve mathematical problems. To this end
children need to have a firm grasp of number bonds, tables and
ordering number. It is essential that children can work quickly and
effectively both in their heads and on paper.
Teaching also ensures that appropriate connections are made between
the programmes of study taught in number, shape, space and measures
and handling data.
