English

The National Literacy Strategy rigorously determines what is to be taught, and how it is to be taught. The strategy includes all aspects of English including spelling and handwriting.

Children initially follow a variety of reading schemes. Daily guided reading sessions provide an intense “reading”/comprehension session.

Children can take reading books home from the Ginn 360 scheme. Children at the early reading stage and those with reading difficulties follow phonetically based schemes and also include key and high frequency words.

The National Literacy Framework is our scheme of work for English, supplemented by speaking and listening activities.

Our handwriting scheme is an extension of the one at Royd Infant School and we use the Nelson Handwriting scheme.
