The Curriculum

Children at Junior School follow the Key Stage 2 programme of the
National Curriculum. This includes mathematics, English, science and
information and communication technology (ICT) which are sometimes
referred to as the core subjects.
History, geography, music, design and technology, physical
education, religious education, and personal, social and health
education (PSHE) are referred to as the foundation subjects. French
is also taught as an additional subject.
For each subject the school has drawn up schemes of work based on
National Curriculum Programmes of Study to set out what pupils will
be taught. A child’s individual ability will determine the level or
difficulty of work they study but each child follows the same
programmes of study. For more information it is recommended you look
at the website www.qca.org.uk. There is also a parents section on
this website and lots of details about testing and assessment.
Most of your child’s lessons will be taught by their class teacher.
For some of the more specialised curriculum areas other members of
staff may also lead the lesson.
Children may work individually, in a group or as a whole class as
appropriate to their needs and that curriculum subject.
A number of initiatives in maths and English have been introduced in
all schools throughout England for children identified as not
reaching appropriate age-level expectations and needing additional
support. This involves children working in small groups and
following short structured programmes over a term. This is usually
led by a teaching assistant and overseen by the class teacher and
school SENCO.
